Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. After attending the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York (graduating in the Class of 1851), he served on the western frontier of the United States as a Lieutenant of the Mounted Rifle Regiment. He resigned his commission in the United States Army in May of 1861 and tendered his services to his native state. Appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st North Carolina Cavalry and assigned to the cavalry brigade commanded by Wade Hampton, he participated in all the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from the Peninsular Campaign until Gettysburg, a few weeks after which he received his commission as Brigadier General, PACS (July 23, 1863). Several times wounded, he suffered intensely from his wounds and assumed post command of the Second Military District in North Carolina in 1864. In March of 1865 he commanded the North Carolina Junior Reserve brigade in the final battles in North Carolina, most notably at Bentonville. Post-war, he engaged in farming, and later became a railway agent at Suffolk, Virginia. where he resided until his death. (bio by: Jeff Stepp)
