Born in Cambridge, Gloucestershire, England to John William Edwards and Emma Smith on 7 November 1879. She was named Jane Edwards by her parents, probably after her Aunt Jane (Edwards) Rowland who raised her after her mother died in October 1880. Jane disliked her name very much and preferred to go by the name Jennie which appears on all records after her birth and Christening records. Jennie worked as a teacher in England as a young woman before she met two mormon missionaries. After several meetings she was baptized to the great displeasure of her Aunt. Shortly thereafter, in about 1902, she immigrated to Utah where she continued to work as a teacher. While teaching, she met her husband Joseph Smith Baird whom she married on the 8 June 1906. They had two children together, Lois and Joseph, in Salt Lake City. The marriage ended sadly and Jennie was left to take care of the children alone. The last decade and a half of Jennie's life was spent in Rexburg, Idaho where she died in 1932.
