Phyllis Baird Ackerman
Phyllis Baird Ackerman, age 75, of San Pedro, Calif., formerly of Brigham City, died Nov. 23, 1987, at Torrence Memorial hospital of burns received in her home.
She was born Sept. 19,1912 Garland, the daughter of Felix D. and Valerie Johnson Baird.
She married Ralph E. Ackerman May 18, 1946, Los Angeles. He died October 24, 1972.
She lived in Ophir, moving to Brigham City while in her teens.
She attended Box Elder High School, graduating in 1929 as Valedictorian of her class. She graduated in 1933 from the University of Utah where she was the recipient of several scholarships.
After graduation she taught school at Box Elder High school for a number of years, then served as librarian of the Brigham City Carnegie library before moving to California.
She was very active in volunteer work in San Pedro in connection with nursing homes and the library, taking the library to shutins and remembering the patients on special occasions.
For this, and many other volunteer activities, she was honored in 1976 by Mayor Tom Bradley of Los Angeles as the "Bicentennial Woman of the Year."
She spearheaded the building of a library in San Pedro. On One occasion in order to meet a deadline she organized an effort that raised $4000,000 dollars to keep the project going. At the dedication of the library, she was given a standing ovation by the audience, and
was honored by the California Association of Librarians. She also gave reports on her activities to UCLA library dept.
At the time of her death she was active in a program called "Books-on-Legs,"
She is survived by one brother, Don J. Baird, Brigham City, and one sister, Mrs. Kenneth (Marco) Giles of Rosemead, Calif., two stepchildren, Charles and Charlotte Ackerman, both of the California area; seven nieces and nephews and many friends.
Funeral services will be held in San Pedro on Nov. 28. In Brigham City, services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m. Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. until time of services at the Petersen mortuary.
Burial will be in the Brigham City cemetery.
