Abraham was the son of Ephraim Bainter and his second wife Phoebe Ann Ogan. Half-siblings were: Peter E. Bainter, Harriett M. Bainter, William Bainter, and Loson Bainter. Siblings were: George Washington Bainter, Alonzo C. Bainter, Sherman Grant Bainter, Margaret Bainter, and Ellen Bainter.
He was a Spanish American War veteran.
On 19 May 1898, San Antonio, Texas; Abraham L. Bainter enlisted as a Private with Troop I of the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry (Rough Riders). On 24 July, he was promoted to Corporal per Regimental Order No. 5. On 15 Sep 1898, Camp Wikoff, Montauk Point, Long Island, New York; Abraham and his unit were mustered out of service. He was recorded as a resident of Colorado Springs, Colorado (Muster Papers).
