Civil War: Company F, 8th California Infantry

Henry Bane enlisted as a private at San Francisco, California, February 2, 1865, and was mustered into Company F, 8th California Infantry, at the Presidio of San Francisco February 3. Henry was 5 feet 4 1/2 inches tall and a Roman Catholic. Private Bane was mustered out at Fort Point (San Francisco) October 24, 1865. After the war Henry remained in California and earned his living as a construction laborer. He appears as a laborer in voter Great Registers up and down the San Joaquin Valley: Modesto, Stanislaus (1881); Fresno, Fresno (1873); Sacramento (1886); Bakersfield, Kern (1888); Sacramento (1890); Bakersfield, Kern (1892); and Bakersfield, Kern (1894). Henry was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Sawtelle from his residence at Bakersfield, Kern County, March 19, 1895. He filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at the Sawtelle Home May 7, 1895, and received application No. 1,166,592 and certificate No. 928,234. Henry remained at the Sawtelle Home until he requested a discharge February 3, 1903. Henry went to Napa County where he was admitted to the Veterans Home of California at Yountville June 27, 1908. Henry left the Yountville Home and returned to Los Angeles, where he was readmitted to the Sawtelle Home August 18, 1913. Henry checked out of the Sawtelle Home September 27, 1915, and returned to the Yountville Home. Henry returned to the Sawtelle Home March 23, 1916. Henry checked out of the Sawtelle Home for the last time July 16, 1920, and returned to the Yountville Home where he remained until his death. Henry Bane was buried in the Yountville Veterans Home cemetery. He was never married.
