Irene C. Bain outlived her husband by more than 70 years. She outlived 12 brothers and sisters and all her friends. Bain died Wednesday. She was 103. ''She was very independent all of her life,'' said Veronica Lesesne, the closest of Bain's surviving relatives. ''She never had children. ''Bain was born in Philadelphia. Her mother was from an Irish family and her father, a coal miner, was from a German family. Lesesne of Winter Park said Bain inherited from her parents strikingly good looks.Bain's husband was 30 when he died of a ruptured appendix, leaving Bain a widow while in her late 20s. For decades, she worked in Washington, supervising switchboard operators at the Woodward & Lothrop department store. Bain lived in the same suburban home for 55 years. She was active and had many friends, Lesesne said. In 1991, she moved to Winter Park to live with her niece after dislocating her shoulder in a fall while carrying laundry. Lesesne said her aunt remained in generally good health, although ailments finally forced her to move to a nursing home. "I don't think she had planned on dying, " Lesene said. "She always had a clear mind." Funeral arrangements are by Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Homes. The Orlando Sentinel, 14Nov1996, Metro section, p. 3
