CORONER'S JURY ASKS THAT NEGRO BE HELD ON CHARGE OF MURDER
A coroner's jury late yesterday afternoon at an inquest conducted over the body of Charlie Bain, colored, by George M. Okell, justice of the peace, as coroner ex-officio, recommended that Dan Mitchell, colored, be held for murder in connection with Bain's death. Bain was shot to death last Saturday night at his home in colored town.
The testimony at the inquest was to the effect that Bain was seated on the porch of his home when Mitchell came out of a nearby alley with a revolver in his hand and asked of a girl where another girl could be found.
The girl asked him what he was going to do with the gun, whereupon Bain entered the conversation and Mitchell, in resentment, pointed the revolver at him, the witnesses said. Bain then grasped Mitchell by the hand and in the scuffle that followed the two men rolled onto the ground, during which time a shot was fired. Bain died almost instantly.
Mitchell was arrested Monday night by Sheriff Louis A. Allen and Deputy Sheriff E. J. Starling, who found him up a tree in colored town. He told the officers that he shot in self-defense.
