Basil L. Bailey, 85, of Princeton, went home to be with the Lord Friday, December 14, 2007 at Bluefield Regional Hospital in Bluefield following a two month illness.

Born December 21, 1921 in Herndon, he was the son of the late Oscar Bailey and Verlie Milam Bailey.

Mr. Bailey served in the U.S. Army for four years. He was a bus driver in Wyoming County for 38 years and a police officer in Mullens for 20 years. He was a mechanic at a Buick garage in Mullens and a maintenance worker for the town of Mullens. He was a member of the DMA Group at the Johnstons Chapel in Princeton and the RSVP in Princeton. He was a member of the Shawnee Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mabel Roberts Bailey; one sister, Mildred Smith; and one son-in-law, Wayne Blankenship.

Survivors include wife of seven years, Christine Bodenheimer Reed Bailey; one daughter, Wanda Bailey Blankenship of Mullens; stepchildren, Wayne Reed and his wife Elouise of Princeton, Lonnie Reed of Herndon, Dale Reed and his wife Robin of Lashmeet, Hazel Jewell and her husband Jason of Herndon, Larry Reed and his wife Becky of Oceana, Carol Lusk and her husband Eugene of Lashmeet and Lula McKinney and her husband Rickey of Fairview; two brothers, Gene Bailey and Jimmy Bailey both of Ocean City, Md.; five sisters, Carmen Bailey of Rt. 1, Matoaka, Genalee Arnold of Pineville, Bonnie McKinney of Giatto, Peggy Adams of Rt. 1, Matoaka and Gertrude "Snook" Cameron of North Carolina; and as Basil said, "a tribe of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews."

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 17, 2007 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Ron Richards officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where military honors will be conducted by the WV National Guard Honor Guard and the Mercer County Veterans Council.

Serving as pallbearers will be Eugene Lusk, Curtis Martin, Jason Jewell, Dale Reed, Jamie Morgan and Larry Reed.
