His father was Benjamin Bailey and his mother, Rachel (Dickey) Bailey. They moved from their home in Iowa to San Francisco, CA when Ralph was age 6. Moving from there to Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. Lived in Junction City, Lane County, Oregon for a short time. Hitching up their covered wagon they then went to Walla Walla, Walla Walla County, WA. Staying long enough only to work in the haying season. By fall they were living at Medical Lake, Spokane County, WA.
When younger he worked for the Hutton and Schoeler's sawmill at Clear Lake, Skagit County, WA. He was very musical. He played first cornet in the band and was widely known as a "fiddler" for social gatherings".
When he was 21 years old, he came to Harrington and homesteaded land southwest of town.
He married Ann F. Charlton 1 November 1904 Harrington, Lincoln County, WA.
He died from a heart attack.
