Virginia "Ginny" Askerman, 68, died Feb. 6, 2006, at Yavapai Regional Medical Center in Prescott, Ariz. A celebration of her life was March 11 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Lake Otis Parkway and Tudor Road.
She was born Sept. 4, 1937, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Harry and Esther (Dahl) Bagby. A graduate of Ohio University, Mrs. Askerman moved to Alaska with a spirit of adventure in 1963. She served as church administrator as well as member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church. She volunteered in her children's schools, for the food banks and for the League of Women Voters. She and her husband moved to Prescott in 2003. There, she was a member of the Prescott United Methodist Church, the OSHER Life Long Learning Institute at Yavapai College, and volunteered with the Heritage Nature Center. Family wrote: "Ginny enjoyed time with people, especially her family, downhill skiing, her morning tea and watching the birds in her back yard. She saw the best in everyone and brought out those qualities. After 40 years of living in Alaska, she could not go to a public place without running into a person who knew and liked her. She cared about people and had a sense of justice, yet never said an unkind word about anyone. Every day, Ginny lived a chapter out of the content of her character and touched many with it."
Mrs. Askerman is survived by her husband, Douglas; children, Christopher and wife Naomi Flint of Lafayette, Colo., Bryan Flint of Tacoma, Wash., and Kevin Flint of Los Angeles; sister, Barbara and husband Robert Schnabel of Grasonville, Md.; and grandchildren, Maya, Stefanie and Evan. The family suggests memorials in Mrs. Askerman's name to the FISH food pantry, St. Mary's Church, 2222 E. Tudor Road, Anchorage 99507. She was very concerned that while many of us are fortunate enough to have good meals every day, others much less fortunate go hungry. Friends are invited to sign the guest book and view a tribute for Mrs. Askerman at www.ruffnerwakelin.com Arrangements are with Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home.
