Bessie Arends, 95, Pipestone, died Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Ashton Care Center, Pipestone.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 15 at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Martens officiating.

Casket bearers will be Tony Arends, Marty Arends, Ryan Wipper, Steve Werner, Alvin Brinkmeyer, and Gordon Moeller.
Interment will be in New Woodlawn Cemetery, Pipestone.

Bessie Marie Arends was born to Earl and Etta (Johnson) Backer on March 9, 1913 in Pipestone County. She was raised on the family farm and attended country school. She then attended Pipestone High School where she graduated in 1931.

She married Everett Arends on May 27, 1931 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Following their marriage they lived with their parents until 1933 when they went on their own farming east of Woodstock. Two years later they moved to a farm near Woodstock. In 1939, they moved to their farm in Fountain Prairie Township of Pipestone County. In 1980, they retired from farming and moved into Pipestone. Then in 1981 they returned to live on the farm.

Everett preceded her in death in March 1984. After his death, Bessie remained on the farm. On Oct. 20, 2008 she became a resident of Ashton Care Center.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Pipestone where she was a member of the church circle. She was also a member of Pipestone Historical Society, the Senior Citizens and the Heritage Club. She was also a member of the board of directors which formed Progress, Inc.

She is survived by her daughter, Eva Arends, Pipestone; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Angie Arends, Paynesville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett; one son, Marlin; one daughter, Delores Oberg; one great-grandson Brandon and one son-in-law, Miles Oberg; three brothers, Frank Backer, George Backer and an infant brother and one half-sister, Kate Lawson.
