Dora A. Krapf Stender, 83, of Peotone, died Jan. 13, 2001, at St. James Hospital Olympia Fields Campus. She was born July 28, 1917, in St. John, Ind. She was a member of the Kankakee County Wanderers and the Prairie Schooners, and was active in St. Paul's Catholic Church and the First Presbyterian Church of Peotone. Mrs. Stender is survived by her husband, Leo J. Stender, whom she married Aug. 28, 1982, in Lowell, Ind.; two sons, Clarence (Linda) Krapf of Demotte, Ind., and Harold (Brenda) Krapf of Crown Point, Ind.; two daughters, Jeanette Horton of Knox, Ind., and Barbara Hughes of Crown Point; one step-daughter, Lynn A. Stender of Peotone; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Nick (Dorothy) Backe of Merrillville, Ind., and Andrew (Sylvia) Backe of Crown Point; and one sister, Marie Rutkowske of Cedar Lake. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Martin Krapf, in 1977; one grandson; her parents, Nickolas and Otillie Erb Backe; several brothers and sisters; and two sons-in-law. A funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 17 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Peotone, where she was a member. The Rev. Michael Ginter officiated. Burial was in St. Edward's Cemetery in Lowell, Ind. Pallbearers were Martin Horton, David Krapf, Dale Krapf, Keithe Hughes, Brian Krapf, Mike Krapf, Kevin Hughes and Nick Krapf. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Disease research. Arrangements were under the direction of Fedde-Helfrich Chapel, Peotone.
