Aubrey Leigh Back, 17, East Stone Gap, died Jan. 31, 2000 at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
She was a life-long resident of East Stone Gap and a senior at Powell Valley High School, where she was co-president of the senior class, an honor student, member of the BETA Club, member of the basketball, volleyball, and track teams.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the Col. C.H. Hagy Chapter No. 45, D.A.V. and she was employed by Burger King in Norton.
Aubrey attended West End Baptist Church in Big Stone and preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, George C. Back.
Survivors include her mother, Janet Back Mellon and her stepfather, Richard Mellon of East Stone Gap; maternal grandmother, Betty A. Back of Big Stone; stepbrother Brett Mellon of Johnson City; stepsisters, Kristy Mellon of Johnson City and Sarabeth Mellon of Big Stone Gap; cousins Jamie Watts of Richmond, Brandon Watts, Amanda Back and Braxton Back all of Big Stone; several great-aunts and great-uncles.
Services were held in West End Baptist Church with the Rev. Garry Arnett officiating.
Burial followed in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to be made to the Nationsl Children's Cancer Society.
