She was the granddaughter of Sarah Franklin Bache and Richard Bache. She was the great-granddaughter of Benjamin Franklin. His brother, Alexander Dallas Bache, the second Superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, is also buried in the Congressional Cemetery.

She was the daughter of Richard Bache Jr. On February 28, 1849 as Sally Franklin Bache, she married Richard Wainwright in the District of Columbia. Although her birth name was Sarah Franklin Bache she is found as Sally Franklin Bache on her 1849 record of marriage; as Sallie Wainwright on the 1860 Census for the District of Columbia; as Sally Franklin Wainwright in the 1864 District of Columbia City Directory; as Sally Wainwright in the 1878 District of Columbia City Directory; as Sally Franklin Wainwright in Congressional Cemetery 1880 records; as Sally Franklin Wainwright in her 1880 obituaries; as Sarah Franklin Bache on the 1925 record of death for her daughter, Maria Campbell Bache Schroeder in the Rhode Island Deaths & Burials and as Sally Bache on the 1926 record of death for her son, Richard Wainwright in District of Columbia Deaths.
