Ethel May Bacchus was born in Eagle River, Michigan July 9, 1892, the daughter of William Charles and Anne Gigg.
She attended school in Beemer, Nebraska until age 13 when her parents moved to McClure, South Dakota where they established a homestead. She received additional education at Pierre, South Dakota and later at Morningside College in Iowa. she taught school until her marriage on February 10, 1914 to James Edward Bacchus. The next several years spent as a farmer's wife until 1925 when she returned to teaching in rural schools in Lyman County, South Dakota. They returned to Alexandria in 1930, and remained in this area until her husband's death in July 1970. After that she made her home with her daughter Frances, in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.
Mrs. Bacchus passed away April 21, 1973 at the Unity Hospital, Fridley, Minnesota. Her death resulted from a Cerebral hemorrhage that occurred while a guest at the home of her daughter Arlys who lives in suburban Minneapolis. Surviving are four daughters and two sons: Mrs. Dolan (Arlys) Toth of Circle Pines, Minnesota; Mrs. Charles (Uarda) Wisdom, Seattle, Washington; Mrs. Ned (Edine) Adair, Tucson, Arizona and Frances of LaCross, Wisconsin, Robert Edward Bacchus, of Georgetown, Texas and Dr. Wilfred Allen Bacchus of Newport, Rhode Island. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. a sister, Mrs. Martin P. Carlson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota also survives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Frank, and her son Sidney Earl Bacchus, who was killed in action in World War II while serving his country in Luzon, Philippine Islands, May 19, 1945.
Funeral services were held April 25, 1973 from Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Giles Ekola officiating. Interment was in Kinkead Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Jack Bertoch, Clarence Benson, Harold Bergby, John Conrad, Alvin Larson and LaMont Mounsdon. Honorary pallbearers were A.G. Bartholome, Andrew Greiss, C. Fred Hanson, Hugo Nelson and Ernest Peterson.
