On December 27, 1885, Baca was the deputy county treasurer for Apache County, when he was robbed in the courthouse of $11,000 in cash.
The robbers were the notorious Clanton brothers (Ike and Phin) and fellow outlaws Lee Renfro and Buck Henderson.
A few days later the outlaws were arrested. But they were shortly released due to the lack of evidence.
Approximately one year later Baca was accused of embezzlement and used the robbery to cover up his crime. He was sentenced to 10 years in Yuma prison.
In 1889 new evidence was revealed that exonerated Baca and that he had been robbed. Baca received a full pardon.
