Cleofas Baca, 70, of Portales, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at his home.
He was born March 21, 1930, in Santa Rosa to Juanita and Remijio A. Baca.
He grew up in Santa Rosa and Portales, and he married Mary Dora Sisneros on June 30, 1956, in Santa Rosa.
They made their home in Santa Rosa, and later in Beulah, Texas, before coming to Portales in 1984.
He was injured many years ago, and has been unable to work since then, but he was well-known for his musical abilities with the guitar.
For several years, he was active in in the Portales Senior Citizens, and participated in the Senior Olympics at La Casa de Buena Salud.
He suffered a stroke in 1991 and been homebound most of the time since then.
Baca was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church in Portales.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Juanita and Remijio A. Baca' three brothers, Alfonso Baca, Johnny Griego and Billy Griego; and his wife, Mary Dora Baca, who died March 20, 1990.
Survivors include four sons, Eddie Romo of Santa Rosa, Jimmy Baca of Las Vegas, N.M., Clifford Baca of Santa Rosa and Bobby Baca of Portales; three daughters, Sharon Baca of Portales, Betty Baca and Corrine Baca, both of Santa Rosa; four sisters, Phoebe Sisneros of Moriarty, Dora Maes and Senaida Baca, both of Clovis, and Pita Gomez of Albuquerque; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. today at St. Helen Catholic Church.
A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Helen Catholic Church. The Rev. Tobin Hitt will be the celebrant.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Michael Baca, Anthony Baca, Richard Baca, Clifford Baca III, Ronny Mares and Jake Mares.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
