James Bable was born in Tuscarawas Co. June 28, 1839. He moved to Defiance Co. in his 13th year. He was the son of Joseph and Jane Bable. His father and mother and 2 brothers and 3 sisters preceded him in death and 1 brother is still living. He spent his boyhood in Defiance and Paulding Co. He twice married. He married Caroline Matty in 1860, 4th of July [should be 22nd of July according to marriage records]. To this union 2 children were born, 1 dead, 1 living. His wife died 4th of July, 1866. He enlisted in the Civil War, April 10, 1861. He served 3 months in 14th O.V.I. [war records indicate James spent most of the war in the 68th Regiment, Company C of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry). He enlisted in 1861 and was discharged the 10th of July in 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. He was married the second time to Diana Forsythe in September 6, 1866. To this union was born 14 children, 7 boys and 7 girls.

His second wife died August 12, 1913. He moved to Defiance in 1912, where he resided till his death which occurred January 31, 1922 at his home 1124 Perry St. Three sons and 3 daughters have preceded him in death. He leaves 1 brother, 4 sons and 5 daughters with a number of grandchildren and great grand children and other relatives and friends to mourn the loss of our dear father. His age was 82 years, 7 months and 3 days.
