Leaving New York when the split between the North and South seemed evident, he traveled to Richmond. He found employment in the printing divisions of the Post Office and Treasury Departments.
On February 19,1864, he was mustered in as Captain of Company H, 3rd Battalion, Virginia Local Defense Troops. His company was known as the Memminger Guards.
After the war he founded the Richmond Ice Company and became a wholesale dealer in Kennebec River ice.In late 1880's he retired to his farm "Cedar Lawn".
In 1888, he was one of the founders of the Richmond City and Seven Pines Railway Company.
