Robert Roy Babb, 95, of 411 Greystone Drive, Piedmont, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, as a result of injuries he sustained in a hit and run motor vehicle collision on West Georgia Road on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004.
Born in Greenville County on July 8, 1909, he was the youngest son of the late John Quincy Babb and Ella Jamison Babb Rhodes.
Mr. Babb formerly owned and operated Roy Babb's Garage. He served as Fire Chief of Augusta Road Fire Department. He retired as an Automotive Mechanic Instructor from Greenville County Technical College, but continued to teach on a part time basis until the age of 72 years.
An active member of Augusta Road Baptist Church since 1927, Mr. Babb served the church in numerous roles, including as a teacher in the Sunday School Department for many decades. He was named Deacon Emeritus. At the time of his death, Mr. Babb was an active member of the Mary-Martha Bible Study Class. He was a charter member of the Augusta Road Kiwanis Club, and had served the community throughout his lifetime.
Mr. Babb is survived by his wife, Dorothy McWhite Garrison Babb, of the home; his only daughter, Lottie Margaret Babb Brown and son-in-law Robert Leard Brown of Hollywood, Fla.; niece, Rachel Ann Jackson Arnold and husband Steve Arnold of Atlanta, Ga.; great-nephew, Thomas Waldrep-Bolt and wife, Jeni, of St. Thomas, V.I.; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Other family members include C.E. (Gene) Garrison and daughter-in-law Carolyn Wharton Garrison of Warrenton, Va.; Susan J. (Jan) Garrison, M.D. and son-in-law Sylvan Schwartz Jr., of Houston, Texas.
Grandchildren include Major Elizabeth Carroll (Beth) Garrison Kubala and husband Major Michael Andrew Kubala of Killeen, Texas, Amy Meredith Garrison Diaw and husband Mohamed Diaw of Burke, Va., Mary Ann Garrison Heiskanen and husband Micce Heiskanen of Ashburn, Va., Grant William Gerber of Houston, Texas, and Gwendolyn Leigh Gerber of Houston, Texas.
Great-grandchildren include Zachary Andrew Kubala and Joshua Michaell Kubala of Killen, Texas, Saliou Diaw of Burke, Va., and Alec Mikhael Heiskanen of Ashburn, Va.
Mr. Babb was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Genevieve Graham Babb, his brother John Arch Babb, and his two sisters, Edna Lee Babb Robinson and Lottie Mary Babb Waldrep Jackson Neal. Mr. Babb was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. at Augusta Road Baptist Church by the Rev. Marion Hare and the Rev. Chris Cadenhead. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers will be Robert Leard Brown, C.E. (Gene) Garrison, Thomas Waldrep-Bolt, Grant Gerber, Russell Brown, Royce Carter, Carroll Kirby, and Larry Bryson.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Mary-Martha Bible Study Class, Harold Cox, James Hood, Barry Phillips and the Deacons of Augusta Road Baptist Church.
The family is thankful for the witnesses, neighbors and friends who came to the scene to aid Mr. and Mrs. Babb and their dogs Mitzi and Buddy, as well as the quick actions of the emergency medical responders and law officers. In addition, the family is extremely grateful for the professional, conscientious care delivered to Mr. Babb in the last hours of his life by the Neuro/Trauma ICU nursing staff and trauma physicians at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
All of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren will dearly miss their much-loved "Grandpa Roy" who was taken from them so suddenly in such a tragic manner much sooner than anyone ever expected.
