John Hancock Babbitt Jr., 73, of Peoria died Monday, June 2, 1997, at Proctor Hospital.

Born May 7, 1924, in Garrett, Ind., to John Hancock and Edith Wells Babbitt, he married W. Juliet Thulin on June 19, 1948, in Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Mark Alan (Julie) Peterson of Whitefish Bay, Wis., Mrs. James B. (Jean) Ashton of Peoria and Mrs. Kevin James (Cynthia) Pirok of Geneva; and one sister, Priscilla Babbitt of Indianapolis.

He was a mechanical engineer at Caterpillar Inc. for 41 years, retiring in 1968. He held many patents with Caterpillar Inc., where he worked in research engineering, the large truck division and the defense products division. He was a mechanical engineering instructor at Bradley University for several years.

Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery.
