Charles was born December 26, 1848 in Newbury Township, Geauga County, Ohio. He was the son of Henry Bartlett and Seleucia Davis. Charles was the oldest living son of a family of eleven. There were four boys, but only two lived. There were five sisters who grew to womanhood. He was christened Charles Joseph, but on account of some of his love letters being sent to an older Bartlett with the same given name, he changed his middle name to Claymore. He married Annie Katrine Jensen on September 12, 1868. They had 10 children.
