Services were Monday at Horn Funeral Home, Delphi, for Loren D. Ayres, Rt. 1, Cutler, who died Friday, Sept. 21, 1984, at 6:30 a.m. in his home.
Born Nov. 9, 1909, in Cutler, his parents were Morris and Bertha Draper Ayres. His marriage was Aug. 12, 1932, to Lillian Brown Ayres. She survives.
Mr. Ayres became a member of the Indiana State Police with the first recruit class when it was reorganized in a merit organization in 1935. He served with the force until 1949 attaining the rank of first sergeant.
He then moved to Bloomington where he was with the Department of Police Administration at Indiana University until September 1957, becoming an assistant professor in 1956. He was assistant director of safety from 1949 until 1955, supervising 40 full time and 35 part time public safety officers. He was acting chairman of the Department of Police Administration from July 1956 to 1957 and director of Security Training Institute from July 1957 to Sept 1957.
Moving to Lafayette in 1957 he was assistant professor of the Public Safety Institute at Purdue University until Aug. 1, 1963, and offered consulting services including traffic accident analyst and testimony in court. From 1963 to 1966 he was with International Investigator, Inc. and was a private consultant from then until the present.
A member of the Flora Christian Church, he was a former director of the Rossville Ambulance Service, served as jury commissioner for Carroll County and on the board of directors for Carroll County Old Settlers Association.
A graduate of Delphi High School in 1926, and Indiana University in 1951 with an A.B. degree and in 1956 with an M.A. degree, he is author of numerous publications and materials and has given many lectures related to public work and public safety. He had run 800 skid tests on various pavement surfaces to determine speeds from skid marks and tested reaction times of drivers both in simulator and vehicles.
He investigated and reconstructed 1350 accidents since 1963 and investigated or supervised investigation on more than 5000 accidents while with the Indiana State Police.
His memberships included many professional organizations and fraternal and service organizations including Mt. Olive Masonic Order, Commandry and Scottish Rite and a 50 year member of "I" Mens Association at Indiana University.
Surviving with the wife are one daughter, Phyllis Jean Courter, Rt. 1, Cutler, two grandsons and four great-grandchildren.
Burial was in Masonic Cemetery, Delphi. Rev. Rex Loy was officiating minister.
