YORK - Alta Fleming Ayers, 68, of Yorktown, a Peninsula resident for 48 years, died Thursday, June 13, in Mary Immaculate Hospital, Newport News.
Mrs. Ayers retired from A and G Publications at Fort Eustis in 1988 after 20 years. She was a former school bus driver, working for Newport News schools for 10 years and driving for York County schools for nine years.
She was a member of Crooks Memorial United Methodist Church, Yorktown, and a circle of the church.
Mrs. Ayers was a founding member of the Virginia Peninsula Campers Association and a member of the Home Demonstration Club of Yorktown. She also was a volunteer worker with the Bargain Box of York County.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas W. Ayers Jr.; two daughters, Carolyn D. Ayers of Norfolk and Allyson A. Simons of Arlington; a son, Thomas W. Ayers III of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Lois F. Peatross of Richmond and Jeannette F. Kahle of Wicomico; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News.
A funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home by the Rev. Donald L. Long. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, 618-C J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News 23601. Edition: Final
