Son of James C. and Josephine (Southwick) Ayer. He graduated from Harvard in 1878 and managed his father's estate from an office in New York City. He was also a philanthropist and poet.

In 1902, he donated land and about $32,000 (today: $1,150,000) for the Lowell Textile School (now University of Massachusetts Lowell). UML's Southwick Hall is named in honor of his grandparents Royal and Direxa Southwick.
