Harold Axe Jr., 78, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at his residence in Indianapolis.

He was born Oct. 7, 1923, in Bicknell. His parents were Harold and Anna (Arthur) Axe Sr. Survivors include a daughter, Jackie Bartels of La Porte, Iowa; a brother, John W. Axe of Franklin; two sisters, Barbara Tolbert of Tampa, Fla., and Margaret Siek of Largo, Fla.; two grandsons; and one great-grandson.

He was a 1941 graduate of Bicknell High School. He attended Indiana University and graduated from the University of London.

He was a U.S. Army Air Forces veteran, serving as a Mustang fighter pilot in the 8th Air Force out of Debden, England, 4th Fighter Group, Eagle Squad during World War II.

He was employed by General Motors at Allison in Indianapolis as a computer analyst, retiring in 1988.

He was a member of First Baptist Church. He enjoyed horse racing and traveling.

The Rev. Terry Tolbert will conduct a service at 10 a.m. Saturday at Vandivier-Tudor Funeral Home in Franklin. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Prairie Chapel Cemetery in Bloomfield.
