Marshall was the son of Alexander Ralph Avrett and his wife, Annie Claudia Bownds.
Following high school, Marshall joined the U.S. Navy and served 1935 to 1939. He re-enlisted in Dec 1941. He was killed in action in Okinawa during World War II.
Marshall was first buried in an Allied cemetery on an island in the Pacific. His remains were later removed and his final burial was 31 Mar 1949 at Pleasantville Cemetery near Rockdale, Texas, where his parents and other family members are buried.

Rockdale, May -- According to information received here from the Navy Department, Willard Marshall Avrett, 29, fire controlman first class, died of wounds received in action in the Pacific.
No details were given to his wife, Mrs. Doris Simms Avrett, other than that Avrett "died of wounds following action" and was buried in an Allied cemetery on an island in the Pacific. Avrett served his first term in the Navy from 1935-39 after graduating from Rockdale schools in 1935. He re-enlisted in December, 1941, and was serving in his eighth year.
He left the States in May, 1942, for the South Pacific and was in the first invasion of the Solomon Islands at Guadalcanal the following August. He had since then participated in many other island invasions and Naval engagements. Mrs. Avrett is employed in Houston.
