Joseph Thomas Avery (aka Joel Avery) was a private in Company A of the 45th Regiment Georgia Volunteers, Gresham Rifles, Thomas Brigade, during the Civil War. He was wounded in the left shoulder and leg in the Seven Days' Fight near Richmond, Virginia, in July 1863. His left shoulder was paralyzed as a result of his wounds. He was discharged at the camp near Orange Court House, Virginia, on September 6, 1863.
