James H. Avery, 66, of Cleveland, NY, died peacefully at his home on Monday, April 20, 2009 surrounded by his loving family and beloved dogs, after a courageous battle with mesothelioma. Born in Oneida, he was a life resident of Cleveland and had retired from Carrier Corporation after 30 years. He was currently employed by Quest Diagnostics for the past seven years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cleveland, and a lifetime member of the North Shore Voluntary Emergency Squad, Inc. and was currently serving as co-treasurer. Jim served in the US Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis and also served in the US Navy Reserve and the US Coast Guard Reserve. He also was a member of the Trach-Auringer VFW Post #7325 in Constantia and the American Legion Post #858 in Cleveland. He was predeceased by a son, James H. Avery Jr. in 2002. Surviving are his loving wife, the former Diane Fish; his son, Craig (Elizabeth) of Constantia; his daughter, Alicia (Michael) Post of West Monroe; his daughter-in-law, Tracy Avery of Cleveland; his sister, Catherine (William) Mosher of Cleveland; his brother, Carl Avery of York, PA; seven cherished grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday, April 24, 2009 at St. Mary's Church, Lake St., Cleveland with military burial in Hillside Cemetery, Central Square. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the WATSON FUNERAL HOME, INC., 631 So. Main St., Central Square. Contributions, in lieu of flowers may be made to the North Shore Ambulance, PO Box 513, Cleveland, NY 13042 or to the SPCA, 5878 E. Malloy Road, Mattydale, NY 13211.
