DEATH CLAIMS ALBERT AVERY
Civil War Veteran, Shoe Merchant Here for 15 Years, is Stricken
Albert Sinclair Avery passed away at the family home, 203 W. Pearl street, Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock after a month's illness tho he had been in failing health for some time. Mr. Avery was born August 7, 1842 at Topson, Vermont. He was the son of Christopher and Emily Avery and was the youngest of nine children.
Mr. Avery enlisted as a private in the Civil War when he was 21 years old. At the time of his discharge he was a lieutenant. After the war he attended New Hampton institute, then went to Iowa in the late sixties. Later he moved to Colorado and six years after that, in 1894 came to Pomona where he has since resided. He was in the shoe business here for 15 years.
He was married in 1872 to Mary J. Mann, who survives him. One son, Dr. Hazen L. Avery, passed away in 1908, and his wife is the only other close relative surviving.
Mr. Avery has always been active in G.A.R. work, serving as chaplain for many years and as assistant adjutant general for one term. He was a member of the Pilgrim Congregational church and Pomona lodge N. 246, F.& A.M.
Funeral services will be held at the Todd & Reeves chapel Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Dr. Luther Freeman, pastor of the Congregational church will officiate, assisted by Dean Norton of Pomona college. Burial will be made in the family lot in Pomona cemetery. The G.A.R. will have ther services at the grave.
