EDWARD AUTEN SR. DIES AT AGE OF 102
Edward Auten Sr., aged 102, lifelong resident of this community, passed away at the home at 8:30 a. m. Tuesday.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian at 2 o'clock this afternoon, conducted by Rev. Lee H. Smith, the pastor. Interment was in the Princeville cemetery.
Edward Auten was born seven miles south of Princeville, in a log cabin near Kickapoo creek, on May 27, 1839, hence at the time of his death he was aged 102 years, four months and three days.
His parents, Peter Auten and Lydia Chapman Auten, were sent from New York to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) as missionary teachers to Choctaw Indians and having found the climate unhealthful, came overland to Radnor township and settled close to the Chapman relatives who previously came out here direct from Connecticut. In 1849 the family moved to Princeville and this was Edward Auten's home for his long life.
He attended public schools, the academy at Henry, Ill., the old Princeville Academy, and then went to Union College at Schenectady, New York, where he received the degree of A. B. in 1862 and A.M. in 186; also Harvard Law School at Cambridge, Mass., where he received the degree of Bachelor of Law in 186. In that year he was also admitted to the bar in Massachusetts. Before his death he was the oldest living alumnus of both the Union College and Harvard Law school.
He returned to Princeville and engaged in the practice of law. In 1869 he married Miss Maria Louisa Cutter of Pelham, New Hampshire, who had come to make her home wither sister, Mrs. Lemuel Auten. A long and happy married life ensued, ending after more than 64 years with Mrs. Auten's death on December 6, 1933. To them were born nine children, eight of whom survive—Benjamin C. Auten of Carterville, Mo., Mrs. Lydia Armstrong of Urbana, Ill., Peter Auten of Champaign, Charles H, Auten of Chicago, H. Louis Auten of Oak Park and Nellie m., Sarah R., and Edward Auten, Junior, all of Princeville. There are 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A son, Lemuel, twin of Charles, died in infancy.
In 1872 Mr. Auten entered into a private banking business in partnership with his father and this became his life work, until he retired in 1915.
He was a member of the Princeville church for 92 years and was active in church and Sunday school work and was especially interested in education. He gave freely of money and effort toward the Princeville Academy, being the major spirit that kept it going during the last years. He was especially anxious that all youth of the Princeville vicinity should have college preparatory opportunity, for in those days the tax-supported high school existed only in cities. When the high schools came in, the need for the academy no longer existed and it was discontinued. He was a strong advocate of the temperance and fought the liquor traffic in every way he could. He served on the village board as both trustee and president.
Bedfast for the last 20 years or more of his life, he was given every possible comfort and attention through the loving and expert care of his daughters, Nellie and Sarah and his long life is a tribute to their unselfish devotion.
