Graveside Services Held Here Saturday For Peter Auten
Peter Auten who was born in Princeville and spent the larger part of his life here, died July 10, the Burnham City hospital in Champaign, where he has been removed from his home at 106 East High street in Urbana June 25. He had been in failing health for several years by had been up and about until that date when he became suddenly worse.
He was born January 18, 1877 and was 75 years old at the time of his death. He was the son of Edward Auten and Maria Cutter Auten. He prepared for college at Princeville Academy and Phillips Andover Academy, Andover, Mass., then attended Harvard University at Cambridge, Mass., for two years.
In 1902 he was married to Miss Arizona Lufkin of Anna, Ill. To this union two sons were born John L., who died in infancy and Richard a. Auten, now residing in Indianapolis, Ind. Mrs. Auten died in 1939.
In 1940 Mr. Auten was to Miss Grace M. Chapin, whose devoted and loving care during his long period of ill health did much to cheer and comfort him. He was a very active member of the Presbyterian church and held various offices in it wherever he lived. In Princeville he was active as a member of the Old Settler's Union and did much to gather and preserve family histories of early pioneer days.
Surviving besides his wife and son, Richard are two grandchildren, Don Edward and Nona Louise Auten; one sister Sarah R. Auten; and four brothers, Benjamin C. of Carterville, Mo., Edward Jr. of Princeville, Charles H. of Chicago and H. Louis of Denver. One brother and two sisters preceded him in death
Funeral services were held in Champaign July 12 and burial was at Princeville with Rev. Daizell in charge of the service.
