Betty Ruth Austin Allen
Surrounded by her loving family, Betty Ruth Austin Allen was welcomed home peacefully by our Lord and Savior on Thursday morning. All ready, complete with her halo and wings, 'Mama', 'Sis', 'Aunt', 'Mamaw' Betty left behind a legacy of love, strength and selflessness among her family and friends. She spent her last 5 years making friends at Wilora Lake Healthcare Center in Charlotte, NC with people like Mrs. Jessie Ross, Mrs. Alice Davis and Mrs. Mabel Foy only to name a dear few. Betty Allen loved her friends. It was there, among the many other places in her life where she became the friend, the adopted mother, grandmother or sister of those whose lives she touched. Betty Allen never met a stranger.
Born January 3, 1927 in Monks Corner, SC, Betty Allen spent her life as an inspiration to others. Born second in a family of 9 children, she knew the value of hard work. From helping raise her siblings, working in the fields of the farm she grew up on, living through the Great Depression to raising 4 children and 6 grandchildren, she was no stranger to sacrifice and what it meant to be strong. She taught this incredible strength to her children as well as her innate ability to put the needs of others before her own. Always there with encouraging words and a smile to brighten any room, her sweet compassion for everyone she met was given so freely from within. Betty Allen loved her family. She will remain a guiding light to those she left behind and will forever live in the hearts of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren as she watches down on them from heaven.
Betty Allen resided in Marshville, NC for a spell before settling in Charlotte, NC for over 60 years to raise her family. She retired from Employers Mutual Insurance Company in 1989 after 20 years or service. She is preceded in death by her son, Ralph Thomas Allen Jr., grandson Shawn Allen, two late husbands Ralph Thomas Allen Sr. and James W. Braswell, 4 sisters and 2 brothers. She is survived by her 2 sons Fred Steven Allen (wife Debbie) of Hemby Bridge, NC; Paul Douglas Allen (wife Marsha) of Acworth, GA; 1 daughter, Deborah A. Callahan of Charlotte, NC; 5 loving granddaughters, 2 great-granddaughters, whom she loved a bushel and a peck; 1 sister Elaine Newell of Indian Trail, NC; 1 brother, David Austin of Concord, NC and 24 nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home, 4715 Margaret Wallace Rd. Matthews, NC, Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. with the funeral service to start at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. The burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery after the service.
