Alvin F. Austin

Alvin F. Austin, 70, retired school principal and farmer, died at 2:30 a.m., Sunday, June 19, at the Bolivar County Hospital in Cleveland.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Linn Baptist Church near Doddsville and at 3:00 p.m. at Pine Bluff Baptist Church near Winona with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Charles Wesley, assisted by the Rev. Artie Nute, officiated at the Linn rites with Fletcher Funeral Home of Cleveland in charge of arrangements. The Rev. Mr. Wesley was assisted at Pine Bluff by the Rev. Marvin Bibb. Oliver Funeral Home was in charge.

Mr. Austin was born in Montgomery County in the Pine Bluff community and graduated from Kilmichael High School. He received his BS degree from Mississippi College and his ME degree from the University of Mississippi. He taught school at Hebron, Poplar Creek, Kilmichael, Mt. Pleasant, and Sunflower near Clarksdale prior to going to Linn in 1949. He was principal of Linn Consolidated School from 1949 until that school was consolidated with Rulevulle school in 1967. He then taught at Mississippi Delta Junior College until his retirement in 1975.

He and the former Mavis Nicholson of Slayden were married in 1942. He served two years in the U. S. Army during World War II. He also owned and operated a farming business in Linn until his retirement.

Mr. Austin was a member of the Linn Baptist Church and was a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and church treasurer. He was a Mason at Kilmichael.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Alvin F. (Buzzy) Austin, Jr., of Doddsville; a daughter, Mrs. John A. (Fairy) Brown of Springfield, Virginia; two brothers, T. S. Austin of Greenwood and Marvin Austin of Winona; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Billy Tyson, W. Guy Jefcoat, W. E. Jefcoat, Walker Powell, Lawrence E. Braswell, and Morris Downs. Honorary pallbearers were the deacons of Linn Baptist Church.
