AUSTIN, ALBERTA EDWARDS, 65, born November 10, 1945, passed away September 5, 2011 at the Sam Swope Care Center of Masonic Homes of Kentucky. Alberta was the daughter of the late Jerry and Eliza (Mason) Edwards. She was preceded in death by a brother, James. Alberta was born and raised in Harlan County, KY and resided in Lynch, KY until moving to Louisville for health reasons. She attended Lynch West Main High School and graduated from Lynch High School in 1964. She also attended Southeast Community College in Cumberland where she studied business. She was a member of Lynch First Missionary Baptist Church. Alberta held a variety of jobs in retail, but her most enjoyable career was as a teacher's aide at both Benham and Cumberland elementary schools for the Harlan County school system, working primarily with disabled children. She truly enjoyed working with children of all abilities and had a gift for communicating. She is survived by three children, Regina S. Edwards (Blair Butler), Marlisa R. Austin and Anthony E. Austin, all of Louisville; a sister, Patricia Fulmore, of Atlanta, GA; a brother, Jerry L. Edwards (Yvonne), of Lynch. She leaves behind three cherished grandchildren, Theo Eliza, Davis Isaiah and Vivienne Belle Edwards-Butler, all of Louisville; three favored aunts, Clora Tuner, of Harlan, Alice Mason, of Macon, GA and Dorothy Mason of Detroit, MI; an uncle, Jack Edwards, of Fairfield, AL; nieces, Andrea Arnett, of Waco, TX and Diane Whitby, of Brooklyn, NY; nephews, Greg Arnett, of Waco, TX and Joe Fulmore, of Clarksville, TN. She also leaves behind her best friend, Jackie Garner, of San Jose, CA; a host of beloved cousins from Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia, New York, North Carolina and Ohio; and numerous friends she has touched along the way. Visitation will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, September 9, 2011 at Sam Swope Care Center Chapel, 3701 Frankfort Ave., followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. Friday. A private gathering will be held Saturday, September 10, 2011, where her ashes will be scattered in the mountains she loved. W.P. Porter Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
