O.B. Austin, 87, of the N.C. Lutheran Home in Hickory, died Friday at the home after a period of declining health.

He was born May 19 1895 in Catawba County, a son of the late Henry and Lola Austin. He is survived
by his wife, Lula Pritchard Austin.

Austin was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a veteran of World War I. After the war, he lived in Mount Gilead, where he married Mrs. Austin in 1922 They moved to Hickory in 1923 He worked as a salesman for Duke Power Co. During World War II, he transferred to Charlotte with Duke Power.

He later moved back to Hickory and was a salesman for Yount Furniture Co He was retired from Sterchi Brothers Furniture Co .

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, conducted by Dre Billy Mobley and the Rev. David Byler.

Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Members of the Pete Broom Sunday school class and deacons of First Baptist will be honorary pallbearers.

Bass-Smith Funeral Home is assisting the Austin family.
