Willie Luora Watts was the daughter of Rubin F Watts and Martha Jane “Annie” Green. Her mother died in the early 1890s and her father remarried. Willie was first enumerated on 9 June 1900 with her father, step-mother, and family in the town of Mangum, Greer County, Oklahoma. Her age was eleven, date of birth given as June of 1888, and place of birth as Texas. That was the last time her place of birth was listed as Texas. On all other censuses and the California Death Index it was Oklahoma. When she married in 1906 her place was birth was “not known”. When her brother Joe Watts was married in Greer County in 1903 Willie was a witness as was their sister Cora. On 30 December 1906, Willie married Samuel Adam Vickery.
The ceremony was conducted by a Justice of the Peace in her home in Erick, Greer County, Territory of Oklahoma. Her brother James Watts was one of the two witnesses. When Willie and Sam were enumerated on 18 May 1910 they were just across the state line in Collinsworth County, Texas. Their first child Robert Altus was one and a half years old. Her husband Sam was a 27 year old farmer, born in Tennessee. Ten years later on 20 Jan 1920, they were in the township of Dill, Kiowa County, Oklahoma with three more male children. They were still there in 1930 with their four boys. Based on birth information of the four boys, the family most likely moved back to Oklahoma from Texas between August of 1911 when Samuel T was born in Texas and March of 1914 when Clifford was born in Oklahoma. After her first husband's death in 1931, Willie followed her brothers and moved to California with at least two of her boys. There she remarried to Arthur C Austin whose first wife had died in 1934. Based on city directory information it seems likely that they married in either 1935 or 1936. All four children of Willie and Samuel Vichery went to California and died there. Willie’s mother was listed as Balchum in the California Death Index because she had married John Stevens Balcam prior to her marriage to Rubin F Watts and that was her name when she married Watts. Willie would have been only two to four years old when her mother died.
