Ben Austin, 84, of Sparta, formerly of Cookeville, passed away Aug. 25, 2009, at Life Care Center of Sparta. Mr. Austin was born Nov. 16, 1924, in Baxter, to Solomon Austin and Berta Warren Austin. He graduated from Pleasant Hill Academy. Mr. Austin served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as Pharmacist Mate Third Class and received the Good Conduct Medal. He also served as County Road Supervisor, then as County Executive for Putnam County prior to his retirement. Mr. Austin owned and operated The Gift Gallery and worked as a developer and excavator in addition to serving on the Putnam County Court. He has been associated with M.L. Brown Realty for the last 10 years. Mr. Austin was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Milton Austin.

Survivors include his daughter, Benni Austin Rice and husband Jim Ed, of Brentwood; granddaughter, Andi Rice, of Brentwood; grandson, Jed Rice, of Brentwood; special friends, Marsha Brown, of Sparta; and many cousins and close friends. Memorial services will full military honors will be 2 p.m., Aug. 30, 2009, at Crest Lawn Funeral Home, in Cookeville. Mr. Austin had chosen cremation. Bro. Ray Mabey will officiate.
