Arthur A. Austin, 99, passed away September 13, 2023. Born to George H. Austin and Nora E. Austin on October 27, 1923 in Salt Lake City, and moved to Bingham Canyon, Utah at the age of seven years old. He spent two years in the Navy in WWII, one year on the East coast, and 21 months at sea.
He retired from Mountain Bell, Salt Lake City, after 31½ years. Art joined Canyon Lodge #13 Free and Accepted Masons, Bingham Canyon, Utah in 1946. Master of Canyon Lodge #13 in 1964, Midvale, Utah. Past Deputy Grand Lecturer of Canyon Lodge #13 for many years. Past District Deputy Grand Lecturer. Selected Mason of the Year 1985 for Canyon Lodge #13, Midvale.
He was appointed a member of the Advisory Council of Sir Galahad Chapter Order of DeMolay 1965, Midvale. Later it was changed to R.W. Moore Chapter of DeMolay after Bob Moore's death. Received the DeMolay Cross of Honor from the International Supreme Council of the Order of DeMolay in 1975. He was a member of the Advisory Council for 15 years. On July 19, 1987, he received the Legion of Honor from the International Supreme Council.
Joined the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite in 1947 in Salt Lake City. Past Wise Master of James Lowe Chapter of Rose Croix of Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. Director of the 9th Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.
Received the Rank and Decoration of Knights Commander Court of Honour of the 32nd Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in October 1987. On November 4, 1995, he received 33rd Degree Inspector General Honorary in Salt Lake City. Joined El Kalah Shrine in 1965. He was the first elected President of the Past Master's Shrine Club.
He was appointed Chaplain of El Kalah Shrine Temple in January 1988. Member of Martha Chapter #7 O.E.S. in 1989. Past Patron of Martha Chapter in 1994. Worthy Grand Patron with Barbara Z. Webster in 1998-1999 for State of Utah.
Survived by three nieces and one nephew, Laura (Scott) Rhodes, Mary (Dale) Cartensen, Nora (Albert) Avila, and George (Dawn) Austin. Preceded in death by wife Virginia Ross Austin, father George Henry Austin, mother Nora Hardy Austin, and brother George Henry Austin Jr.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Shriners Children's Hospital of Salt Lake City, or the Scholarship Foundation for the Order of Eastern Star.
There will be a viewing Sunday, September 17 from 6–8 pm, and again Monday, September 18 from from 10–10:45 am at Goff Mortuary, 8090 S. State St., Midvale, with funeral services starting Monday at 11:00 am. Interment, Mount Olivet Cemetery.
