Thomas Bostick Austell, 84, passed away at Hospice of Wendover on Monday, July 11, 2011. He was born in Earl, NC on January 10, 1927 to the late Bostick and Gertrude Goode Austell.


He is also preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Bobby; a brother-in-law, Ray Moss; a daughter-in-law, Janet Austell; and a granddaughter, Melanie Austell..


Thomas was a lifelong member of New Hope Baptist Church where he was a member of the Homer Starnes Sunday School Class, member of many committees, a deacon and trustee. He attended Mars Hill College and served in the Navy for eighteen months during WWII in the Atlantic. He returned to Earl in 1946 and joined his father in the poultry business. He loved being active and involved. He was a charter member of the No. 3 Ruritan Club, a charter member of the No. 3 Fire Department, and an Earl Town council member. He was also involved with the Poultry Council, Farm Bureau, Cattlemen's Association, and the Farm Service Agency.


Serving as Honorary pallbearers are the Earl Town Council, Homer Starnes Sunday School Class, No. 3 Rutitan Club, and No. 3 Firemen. Pallbearers will be members of the Fire Department.


Mr. Austell is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Doris Nichols Austell; three sons, Tom and wife Mary of Henderson, NC, Nick and wife Donna, and Hugh and wife Anita of Earl; a sister, Mary Louise Moss, of Charleston, SC; sister-in-law, Pat Austell of Greenville, SC; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Jennifer Long and husband Bert of Henderson, NC, Jason Austell and wife Stacey of Gastonia, NC, Melissa Bradshaw, Becky Austell, and Robby Austell of Earl, NC, Carson and Maddox Long of Henderson, NC, Kayla Bradshaw of Earl, and Grant Austell of Gastonia, NC. He loved and cherished his grandchildren and great grandchildren.


Services will be held at New Hope Baptist Church on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 11:00am. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Russ Bradley, Rev. David Gordan, Rev. Broadus Heatherly and Chaplain Billy Boone. The family will receive friends at Cecil Burton Funeral Home and Crematory from 6:00 – 7:30 on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 and at other times will be at the home in Earl.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the organization of the donor's choice.
