The son of John Cowan Atwood, Sr. and Georgie Tunstall Baker, George was a graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and of Princeton University.

George was married to Rebecca Rood. They were the parents of 2 children. The Atwoods lived in University City, St. Louis County, Missouri and eventually moved to Clayton, Missouri.

George was a salesman for General Van and Storage Company. He went on to become a vice president of Security Trust Company. He worked as a vice president of Mercantile Trust for 8 years before retiring in 1969.

He served as an officer and board member of the Girl Scout Council of Greater St. Louis. He was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church.

George died at his home following a long illness. At the time of his death, he was 69 years, 7 months and 13 days old.

He was survived by his wife, Rebecca; 2 sisters, Katherine Fiske and Ellen Armstrong; and 3 brothers, John C. Atwood, Jr., William Atwood and Harry Atwood.

A memorial service was conducted at 4 p.m. on the afternoon of 17 Apr 1973 at the First Presbyterian Church in University City, Missouri.

His wife, Rebecca, passed away in 2005 and was buried next to him.
