September 29, 1918 - February 25, 2013

Cumberland, MD - A. "Jack" Holmes Atkinson, 94, of Cumberland, MD, passed away on Monday, February 25, 2013, at Allegany Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born September 29, 1918, in Cumberland, MD, Mr. Atkinson was the son of the late Clarence Oscar Atkinson and Minta May (Davis) Atkinson. He was also preceded in death by his wife: Mary Atkinson; and a son: Steven Atkinson.
A United States Army Veteran of World War II, Jack worked as a crane operator for various construction companies in the area most of his life. He was a member of the International Union for Operating Engineers Local #37 for 61 years and the oldest member of the union. Jack loved his job and would tell numerous stories that were always interesting and entertaining. He also never met a stranger and loved people as much as he did his family. Jack was overly generous not only to family but anyone he met. Giving of himself and his belongings to others is what made Jack most happy in life. He was a unique person who will be sorely missed by family and friends. Jack is survived by his son: H. Ricardo "Rick" Atkinson and wife, Bonnie, Bowling Green, Cumberland, MD; and his daughter: Cheryl R. Bell and husband, James "Gus," Cumberland, MD. He is also survived by his brother: Brooke Atkinson, Cumberland, MD; as well as four grandchildren: Mark Atkinson, Jeff Atkinson, Steven Atkinson, and Stephanie Caporale; and four great grandchildren: Ciara Atkinson, Presley Atkinson, Taylor Caporale, and Samantha Caporale.
A committal service will be held in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap on Friday, March 1, 2013, at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Larry Green officiating. Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard.
