Lloyd J. Atkins was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Emmet D. Atkins. He was educated in Gastonia schools, attended the Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, GA, and graduated from Duke University and did some special work at the University of North Carolina...He married Franke Kaschub in 1946, after his military service in WWII. His brothers were Emmet Atkins, Jr. and Ennis W. Atkins.

Lloyd volunteered in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in 1941, before the U.S. entered WWII. He later transferred to the USAAF (8th Air Force in Europe). He was released from active duty in 1945 with the rank of Flight Officer. He later worked for Southern Airways in the U.S., at Birmingham, AL., as a flight instructor and charter service pilot.

He became owner of Swiss Dry Cleaning Company. He died April 25, 1991 in Asheville, N.C., at the VA Medical Center.
