Norbert J. Athman, age 89, a resident of Lastrup, Minn., passed away on Monday, December 22, 2003, at the Pierz Villa.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 24, 2003, at St. John's Catholic Church in Lastrup, Minn., with Father Roger Thoennes, Father Al Stangl and Father Greg Poser officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Parish Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. today at Brenny Funeral Home in Pierz, Minn. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be from 9 a.m. until the service hour on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Norbert J. Athman was born on June 29, 1914, in Granite township to the late Bernard and Katherine (Ellering) Athman. He attended country school near Lastrup. He married Margaret Stangl on October 7, 1940, in Pierz. Norbert was a life-long farmer in the Lastrup area, retiring from farming in 1978, when he moved to Lastrup. He was an avid deer hunter, loved to play cards, ("smear" was his game) especially with his grandkids. He loved ice fishing and enjoyed anyone who talked about fishing and exchanging stories. He also enjoyed auctions and the sales barn in Pierz. Norbert has been a resident of the Pierz Villa for the past three years.
He is survived by his son, Frank Athman of Pierz, Minn.; daughters, Virginia Kapsner and husband Jerome of Pierz, Mary Poser and husband Sev of Pierz and Alice Bayerl and husband Bill of Menomonie; brothers, Edward of Pierz and Bernard of Little Falls, Minn.; sisters, Irene Gaebel of Lastrup, Bernadine Loidolt of Pierz and Alice Poser of West Allis, Wis.; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; son, Dennis; parents, Bernard and Katherine; brothers, Irwin, Cel, Virgil, Victor and Alex; sisters, Marie Banach and Evelyn Branson.
Casket bearers will be his grandsons.
