Irene (Chiotakis) Athanson, 102, of Hartford, wife of the late Arthur Athanson, and mother of the late Hartford Mayor George A. Athanson, fell asleep in the Lord, Monday (June 18, 2001).
Born in Rhodes, Greece, she lived in Hartford for over 75 years. She was a member of St. George Greek Othorodox Cathedral, Pan-Rodian Society and the Ladies Philoptochos Society. She and her husband helped many Greek people from the Island of Rhodes, Greece migrate and settle in the Hartford area.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Zoe (Poulos) Athanson; and her beloved grandson, Arthur George Athanson, both of Hartford; and several nieces and nephews living in Greece.
At the family's request, funeral services were held privately Thursday, at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Hartford. Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
