At the time of his death, Joe was survived by his widow, Grace Valdez Atencio, two sons, and three daughters. He was also survived by the following siblings:

Gavino Atencio, Averello (?) Atencio, Agnes Ortega, Rose Chavez, John Atencio, Louis Atencio, Bill Atencio, Ruth LeBlanc, George Atencio, Cecil Atencio, Al Atebcuim Eva Gallegos, and Mary Trujillo.
