Larry Joel Atchley entered life June 10, 1935 and entered into rest December 1, 2012 in Mena.

He is survived by his wife Jan Atchley, daughter Dr. Jae Renee Atchely of Kauai, son Kevin and wife Joyce Atchley, and daughter Christi and husband John Goss of Mena.
Grandchildren Alex, Zach and Shane Atchley; Brianna, Shawn, and Brookelyn Goss, all of Mena, AR
Brother Ben Daniel Atchley, sisters Mary Alice Leftwich, Virginia Vonderlippe, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Oliver and (El) Nora Atchley, sisters Lilly Bell Wood, Minnie Stanley, Elizabeth Fehrenbach, and Ethel Rouser.

Larry served in the U.S. Army for two years working in Brooke General Hospital at Fort Sam Houston Army Base in San Antonio, TX. After completion of a B.S. Degree at the University of Texas, he moved to Los Angeles, California and worked for approximately 15 years in the California Public School System. It was there that he met and married Jan. Their two daughters and son were born in Los Angeles. While employed by the California Public Schools, Larry received a Master's Degree from Pepperdine, was awarded a life teaching certificate from the state of California, and received a life Parent Teacher Association Membership.
Larry was a member of the Painter Ave. Church of Christ and served as a deacon and a member of the Education Ministry. He moved to Mena with his family in 1971 and accepted a position with Mena Public Schools, from which he retired. He served on the RMCC Board of Trustees for several years.

Serving God was Larry's number on priority. He was an active member of Northside Church of Christ where he served as a deacon. He felt that serving God was best done by serving others. He traveled on mission work in Africa, China, Guadal Canal, Karibas, the South Pacific, and Cambodia. At the Northside Church of Christ he organized a ministry called "Feed the Lambs" and coordinated a jail ministry.

Larry's second priority was his wife Jan, their kids, and grandkids. There were no words that can express how much he loved them and enjoyed being with them, whether it was on trips or just having dinner at the house. He loved and appreciated plants of all kinds and the many little forest animals that lived around their house and yard.

And last but not least was Larry's love for the teachers at Louise Durham School and his many friends in the community. The Church, family, school, and community made him feel surrounded by love.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at Northside Church of Christ with Dr. Austin Emery, Brother Charles Wood, and Brother Steven Morris officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
