Allen F. Askew of Bellingham died peacefully with his family at his side on Sunday, November 25, 2001 at the age of 75.

Beloved husband of Ellen Charlotte Askew, father of Lana Askew of Milwaukee, WI and Ted Askew of Bellingham. He also leaves 3 grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in California, Colorado, and Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Alva Lloyd Askew.

Allen Floyd Askew was born March 23, 1926 in Cartersville, Oklahoma to Carlie and Nova Askew. Raised in Twilight, OK and Denver CO, he graduated from Englewood High School in Littleton, CO before volunteering for the U.S. Merchant Marine in 1944 and serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific war zones in World War II and later in the Korean War. From 1944 until 1953 Allen served on 18 different vessels including Liberty and Victory tankers and cargo ships. During this period he traveled the world and served his country with bravery and distinction. His love for the sea and for maritime history stayed with him throughout his life.

After his discharge from the Merchant Marine, Allen began a 33 year career with the Atlantic Richfield Company. He married Ellen Charlotte Peters on August 7, 1955 in San Pedro, CA and their two children were born there. In 1970 Allen moved his family to Bellingham and worked at the ARCO Cherry Point Refinery as Supervisor of Oil Movements Coordination and Energy Conservation until his retirement in 1986.

Allen was a wonderful and caring husband and father who was always there for his family. He loved to travel, play golf, and to make new friends wherever he went. He will be fondly remembered as a modest, loyal, and kind man to the many friends he leaves behind. His involvement in the San Juan Chapter of the American Merchant Marine Veterans brought him particular pleasure in recent times. His family would also like to thank his friends at the Mount Baker Kidney Center who offered him so much support over the past three years.

Memorial service and reception Wednesday November 28, 1pm at Jones Moles Funeral Home, Lakeway Drive Bellingham. Everyone is welcome. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to the Mount Baker Kidney Center. You may share your thoughts and memories of Allen in the memorial guest book at www.jonesmoles.com.
