The passing of Doctor Bevan Ashton was a shock to his host of friends and the tragic manner of death added to sorrow of his family.
Monday evening at eleven o'clock the doctor was starting his car to go home when Mr. Wm. Bryan of Harmon's Drug Store, happened along and they passed the usual comments on weather and roads. Mr. Bryan informed Crag & Canyon that he took particular notice that the doctor was in the best of health and said he expected no snow trouble on getting up the hill. The doctor then proceeded on his way and that was the last time that he was seen alive.
The doctor's car was found the next day stalled on the road a few hundred yards past the Administration buildings on the way to the Upper Hot Springs.
Philip Ashton his son, immediately started an enquiry and hunt for his father, also Mrs. Ashton had started an enquiry Monday evening when the doctor had not shown up. But it was not until Tuesday afternoon that his body was discovered on the foot path near the east gate of the Administration buildings.
Apparently, not being able to extricate his car from the snow, he started back to Banff for assistance, and had got as far as the east gate when he felt the heart attack coming on, his tracks showed that he went to the side of the road and stretching himself out in a position that he always assumed when these attacks came, he was so found, lying on his back, feet crossed and his hands across his chest as if he was supporting his breathing by holding his chest.
Only the previous Sunday he had two severe heart attacks and it was for this reason that Mrs. Ashton was so concerned about his non-arrival Monday evening.
Doctor Bevan Ashton was a friend to every household in Banff. He was the jolliest companion any one could wish for. He always had a good word for the sick and lowly and many people has he helped to the road to recovery. Many cases he cured when Eastern and Western physicians had given them up, so that there will be sorrow in many home besides those in Banff.
Dr. Ashton was widely known and highly honored in his profession. People from far and near who were his patients testify to the lasting benefits derived from his treatments. A well-read gifted man, with a pleasing personality, Dr. Ashton will be greatly missed by the citizens of Banff.
The Crag and Canyon, and the entire community, extend their sympathy to the bereaved family.
Dr. Ashton was born in England in 1872. His father, Herbert Morgan Ashton was a famous steel engraver. Dr. Ashton leaves one sister, Mrs. H. Coupland of London whose husband's family has for generations been connected with the Empires War Industries. His immediate family is his wife Marion and his son Philip of the Upper Hot Springs.
He first came to Kamloops from London in 1901, where he homesteaded, then for a while in Banff with the Brett interests, then back to Kamloops to prove up on his homestead. But he had become very interested in Osteopathic and was by this time receiving instructions from the famous Doctor Ellison of London, England. Getting all he could from this source he was determined to go the whole way and at the age of forty-eight years in 1919, he entered Osteopathic colleges and studied for four years. He applied himself diligently to this study, and at final exams he passed with high honors, taking his final degree in Kirkesville, Missouri.
During all this student period he did take time to get married, in 1905, taking Miss Marion Peterson of Golden, B.C. for his wife. Then they bought the Upper Hot Springs in 1911 from the Thompson Bros. and have from that date operated this property as the Upper Hot Springs Hotel, the doctor always practicing his much needed osteopathy.
Funeral service will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Masonic Hall, Rev. Canon Tully Montgomery officiating.
Interment will be in the Banff Cemetery with the Banff Funeral Service in charge of arrangements supervised by the Jacques Funeral Home. Family links: Spouse: Marion Peterson Ashton (1875 - 1943)* *Calculated relationship
