Albert Herman Ashley, 86
SACO -- Albert Herman Ashley, 86, of New County Road, Saco, passed away at the Southridge Living Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born in East Machias on Sept. 4, 1925, the son of John and Adrith Randall Ashley.
Al graduated as Valedictorian of Washington Academy in 1942, and as Salutatorian of the University of Maine in 1952, with a degree in Applied Electrical Engineering. He was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honor Society. He later earned a master's degree from Northeastern University.
He served in the Merchant Marines as a radio operator with trips to Holland, Italy, Cuba and the Philippines from 1944 to 1948.
Al worked for GTE Sylvania in Massachusetts for over 43 years. He enjoyed bicycling, reading and designing electrical engineering circuitry.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy 'Betty' Ashley of Saco; a son John Tarbox Ashley of Uxbridge, Mass.; two daughters, Alison Ashley Wilcox of Ridgefield, Wash., and Deborah Ann Ashley of Saco; and a sister, Angie Henderson of Bridgewater. He was predeceased by his brothers, Eugene, James, Dexter and Alvah, and by a sister, Mary Mattatall.
A private graveside service will be held at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco at the families convenience. Dr. Burton Howe will officiate. Dennett, Craig & Pate 365 Main St., Saco are in charge of the arrangements.
